JOHN GLOVER: Hello and welcome to another ‘Pendragon Straight Talk’. The question today is quite a big question so I’ll only answer some of it – what are the visa processing times?

I will pick on three visas to talk about today just quickly, the 457 work visa, the 400 temporary stay visa and the 189 skilled independent or points visa.

With the 457 you have to have a company that can sponsor you first, so once the company has a standard business sponsorship approved which can take up to 6 months, then they have the right to sponsor you for 457

The 457 then, if you have all the documents together and lodge correctly, can take 6 to 8 weeks. Sometimes its quicker depending on the skill set and also how quickly obviously, the immigration department work

If you don’t have the correct documents, and this goes for all visas, then it will take longer, and if they come back to you at any time for any visa and ask you for an extra piece of information you can guarantee that will go into the ‘too hard’ pile and take a lot longer.

The 400 short stay activity visa last for around about 3 months and you can get that in between 9 and 16 days, that’s for specialist skills coming in that need to do some work here

The 189 Skilled Independent Visa means you have to first of all put in an expression of interest. Now an expression of interest means you are asking if you can apply for a visa, so its not an application, that can take up to 12 months itself, and any time during those 12 months you may be asked or invited to apply. Once the 12 months have completed, more than likely, you will not be asked and you will have to put another expression of interest in. If you are asked and they say yes you are invited, please apply, once you’ve got all the documents together, again, and correctly received by the government, it will take between 4 to 6 months.

So the main thing to think about with this is keeping the documents correct, make sure you’ve got everything together, and ready and lodged on time, check the positon and skill because depending on some positions and skills they will take longer because they’re not so wanted, market salary rate when you’re talking about the 457 visa will play a part and the demand of the occupation.

I hope that helps, basically the 457 will take 6 to 8 weeks if you’ve got the correct information, the 400 takes 9 to 16 days and the 189 skilled migration points, after you’ve been asked or invited to apply will take between 4 to 6 months.

Thanks for your time, I’ll talk to you next time.
