Australia needs to fill its existing candidate short market now… not wait several months…
That’s why some Australian companies are utilising the 462/417 Working Holiday Visa (WHV) to help fill their immediate skill shortage issues…
If the individual works out, the companies are offering to organise sponsorship through the TSS 482 work visa… and perhaps further down the line, permanent residency.
Companies are already utilising the 462/417 WHV to fill the skills shortage within a week… plus the government is refunding the lodgement fee if they arrive before 22 April 2022.
Let’s explain further how this works…
Suppose the individual is under 30 or, certain countries (Canada, France and Irish), under 35. The company asks them to come in on their self-sponsored working holiday visa within two weeks of accepting the position. Because the visa rules have been changed due to COVID, they can work for longer than 6 months at one employer and therefore help reduce the skill shortage instantly.
From the WHV, the individual can then move to the TSS 482 work visa if the company chooses to sponsor them, and the individual meets the criteria.
This has come about because the TSS 482 visa is taking too long for companies to wait for the visa to be approved…
To have the skilled worker start asap; they are utilising the 462/417 WHV to fill the gap… Then they are applying for the TSS 482 work visa, while waiting for the visa to be approved, the international can stay on their working holiday visa until the TSS 482 visa is approved. If their working holiday visa expires, then, because they have a valid visa in the immigration system, they will go onto a bridging visa…
With the borders opening to everyone as of the 21st of February, Australia will start to crank up further employment opportunities. This will add additional pressure to the candidate shortage, and companies now need to look at all strategies to fill their vacancies…
If an interested international is under 30 and is keen to get to Australia ASAP, they could be here within a week by utilising their ability to come over on a Working Holiday visa then, once they are here, have worked for a while, look to move to the TSS 482 visa.
This way, the company has the skill they want, working for them now, and then the TSS 482 visa can be applied for when they are onshore, and the company is looking to engage them long term.
This is an excellent time for an international looking to work in Australia, but before you make a move, check out your visa options for your long-term goal and how that could pan out…
If you are a company looking to fill that candidate shortage, then look overseas; the answer may be there…
The government wants it, companies need it, and the international candidate would like it…
A couple of things to bear in mind once the international has used the Working holiday visa they cannot use it again… and perhaps, more importantly, make sure they have the skillset that allows them to qualify for a TSS 482 visa before you take up any of these opportunities
