Research Study on How the pandemic is changing the future

By 15 December 2021December 20th, 2021No Comments

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, the adoption of remote and flexible working was already a trend, particularly in more advanced economies such as Australia and the US. The digital transformations were accelerated with the spread of the disease in 2020 and the necessity of social isolation sent the majority of the companies’ employees to work from home.

The acceleration of digital working has been offering both challenges and opportunities not only for companies, but also for employees. According to research of the McKinsey Global Institute, called The Future of Work After COVID-19, the pandemic reshaped the world and the effects of those transformations will be seen in the long term. The study concludes that remote work is here to stay, e-commerce is growing, automation is accelerating and there is a change in the mix of available jobs that will continue as a result. High skilled jobs are more likely to concentrate most of the opportunities, while middle and low skill jobs are bound to decline more and more.

The research assessed the lasting impact on labour demand, the mix of occupations, and the workforce skills required in eight countries: China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Together, these eight countries account for almost half the global population and 62 percent of GDP.

The pandemic also gave rise to contractors, as well as a shift-towards offshoring and remote hiring. Since the flexibility around remote employees became common, offshore workers benefited and became part of the pool of possible employees to companies. This change in mindset can reduce costs while considerably increasing the quality of service offered. On the other hand, companies which explore offshoring must consider local employment legislation and all its implications to remain compliant.
